Notes for Nathan
Evans:
Note and Queries,
William H. Egle, Annual Volume 1899
(p.144) Welsh Settlers:
In Earl and Caernarvon Townships, Lancaster County.
"Nathan Evans was born in the year
1682 in Treve Eghlis, Montgomeryshire, Wales. He came to this country with the
Welsh emigration before the year 1700 and settled with his countrymen in the
Welsh tract at Radnor, where in the year 1709 he married Susanna, daughter of
Willaim and Ann (Miles) Davies. William Davies was a merchant in Philadelphia.
He owned vessels, and likely lived at Radnor, where he had a plantation. The
following agreement (the original of which is in the possession of descendants
of Nathan Evans} sets forth their occupations. "Memorandum:

Sealed And Delivered

Davies"
The agreement would lead us to believe
that Nathan Evans had considerable means, if he was prepared in fourteen days
after their arrival in America, to pay for the transportation of his kinsfolk,
not limiting the number, and that he was very desirous that they should come to
this country. It is not known that any did come over on his account under the
agreement. He had a brother, Roger Evans in the Province and he mentions in his
will two nephews in the Province of Maryland, likely sons of Roger.
The agreement is witnesses by Hugh
Hughes, who marries Mary Davies, another daughter of Willaim Davies, and Mirick
Davies, a son of William, who was coroner of Philadelphia in 1720 and 1728. The
said Willaim Davies, came to America about 1685, purchased a lot in
Philadelphia on Walnut Street from John Jones, 10-30-1685, and in the same year
he purchased a plantation at Radnor. He was originally a Quaker, and his name
frequently appears in the Radnor and Haverford meeting records. Afterward he
became an ardent Episcopalian. The first Episcopal services in the vicinity
were held in his house, then in a log cabin built upon his plantation, which
burned down early in 1700, and which was replaced by the present St. David's
Church, near St. David's Station, on Pennsylvania Railroad. His children were
members of the church. Nathan Evan's name appears in the records. William
Davies was a vestryman and he was prominent in the church as long as he lived.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1712 and 1714. He died in 1734,
leaving among his assets a "pew in St. David's Church"
From Pennsylvania Archives Vol XIX,
Second Series, we find. In 1715 Willaim Cloud obtained a warrant for 300 acres
of land in Chester County which he assigned to his son, Joseph Cloud who in 1718 had 300 acres
surveyed to him on a branch of the Conestoga Creek; and in First month 1720,
paid ten pounds in part and since by deed "ye 1st May, 1725 conveyed all
his right and title to Nathan Evans, of said county, millwright." This is
the property that he finally settled upon and where he built his house, still
standing and occupied and owned by a descendant [written 1899], in now
Caernarvon township, Lancaster County. Again from same volume "Said Nathan
Evans requests a grant of about 100 acres adjoining the east side of the above
to erect a mill on.' He also requests a grant of a piece of land for a
settlement for his brother Roger, on the southside of his tract, and from
Surveyor Taylor's papers, in Historical Society of Philadelphia, we find that
surveys were made January 1737, to Roger Evans for 150 acres on the North and
South branches of the Brandywine, in Nantmeal Township, and to Nathan Evans,
150 acres on the North branch of the Brandywine in Nantmeal township, Chester
County, warrant having been given to him 9-20-1718 for 100 acres "on which
he intends to build a mill." James Steel gave orders to Isaac Taylor to
lay out the land.
The above fixes the
fact that Nathan Evan's brother Roger was in this country in 1718 and was
living in 1737. He sold his farm in Edgmont township in 1724, and since he
bought the Conestoga farm about the same time, he must have moved to the
Conestoga Valley in this year. He built the house now owned and occupied by
Isaac Evans, on a part of this plantation, which he called the little meadow.
The following is taken from the records of the Bangor Church, Churchtown,
Lancaster County:
"By the honorable William Penn,
Esquire, original proprietor of the Province of Pennsylvania, his charter to
all persons themselves from any part of Christendom into said Province. It is
granted they shall enjoy the free license of the Christian religion under
whatever denomination. Upon this, so engaging a plan of privileges, among
others, several families of Welsh known by the name of Ancient Britons, did
transplant themselves from Wales, in Old England, unto the Province aforesaid
and settled themselves at first in the Township of Radnor, in the county of
Chester, in the province aforesaid, where they erected a place of worship,
where they had divine service, according to the doctrine and discipline of the
Episcopal Church of England, of which Church they were zealous members, and had
for their minister, the Rev. Robert Weyman, the society's missionary for the
Propagating of the Gospel in Foreign parts.
After some years many of them finding
their settlement too confined (from the vast number of incomers) they, Anno
Domini 1730, removed some miles to the westward into a new county called
Lancaster and settled in a township called Caernarvon from a shrine of the same
name in Wales in Old England, and fixing here, they (in imitation of all good
Christians) found that no place would be agreeable to them without the Public
Worship of God, therefore unanimously and cordially consented and agreed
according to their worldly circumstances to build a church of square logo,
which they furnished and gave the name of Bangor from a diocese of that name in
Old England. The principal members who built the church were as follow, viz:
Thomas Williams Evan Hughes
George Huttson Zaccheus Davies
Nathan Evans George Huttson
Edward Davies Edward Nicholas
Thomas Morgan Edward Davies
Rees Davies Hugh Davies
Philip Davies David Davies
Gabriel Davies Morgan Evans
Morgan John John Davies
John Bowen Charles Huttson
John Edwards Thomas Nicholas
Nicholas Huttson John Davies
Note-These Davies were
relatives of Susanna Davies, wife of Nathan Evans. Gabriel and John were her
brothers. Congressman Edward Davies Was a descendant of Gabriel. Nathan Evans
moved to this region ahead of his friends from Radnor.
The first pastor was Rev. Griffith
Hughes 1730-1733. Then in succession Rev. Roger Blackwell, 1733-1739; Richard
Lock, 1739-1751; George Craig, 1751-1759; THOMAS BARTON, 1759-1774. (In the
interval during the Revolutionary War, they had no minister), and Rev.
Frederick Illig, 1782.
On the 17th day of November, A.D. 1751,
the first record of the church was recorded; when Nathan Evans was chosen a
vestryman and he continued each year at the head of the vestry until his death.
At a meeting of the vestry on the 7th day of September, A.D. 1754, a
subscription was taken up to raise money to build a new church. The largest
subscription was given by Nathan Evans, one hundred pounds.
The warrant for the land upon which the
church was built (and still stands) is dated 5-24-1738. Survey was made
"to Gabriel Davies for a church thereon then intended to be erected and since
erected and called Bangor Church, for the use of a congregation of Protestants
of the established Church of England"
Patent was issued to "Linford Lardner (who was a cousin of William
Penn and Treasurer of the Province) and John Davies (the present church
wardens,) and theirs heirs for the use aforesaid." 62 acres and 167 perches. Consideration, 9
pounds, 14 shillings and 8 pence. Quitrent 1/2 penny per acre. In 1759, Nathan
Evans, Senior, pad "for the Glebe land, which lies around the church and
cleared it out of the office by a patent for the use of the minister
officiating in the church of Bangor, 29 pounds, 2 shillings. George
Craig
From the first page of
the church record: "Easter Monday, April 7, 1769. Mr. Nathan Evans Sem.,
paid into the hands of William Douglas, Treasurer to the Chruch of Bangor, the
sum of 19 pounds, 2 shillings and 3 pence, being the last payment of a
benefaction of one hundred pounds which he generously contributed towards
building said church, and which the congregation acknowledges to have now
received in full."
Nathan Evans died December 23, 1763,
leaving a will, mentioned his wife, Susanna, son Nathan, John and James, and
daughters, Ann, wife of Eleazor Evans, and Mary wife of Thomas Nicholas,
grandsons Nathan, son of Nathan; John and David, sons of Ann; Nathan and
William, sons of James, and nephews Richard and Jonathan in the Province of
Maryland (these were likely sons of his brother Roger). After devising the farm
on which he lived to his son James, he bequeathed "Twenty shillings, which
it is my will shall be given to the minister of Bangor Church yearly and every
year forever, which 20 shillings I charge and lay upon the meadow commonly
known by the name Little Meadow."
One of his descendants now lives upon
this farm and the amount has always been and is regularly paid to the church.
He also bequeathed 100 pounds to buy three bells for the church, but money was
used for other purposes. He also devised a farm in Tredyffrin Township, Chester
County, to his grandson Nathan, son of Nathan, subject to an annual payment of
twenty shillings to be used toward the support of a school in said township.
A large slab of marble covers his grave
in Bangor churchyard, upon which is inscribed:
"Waiting for the glorious
resurrection of the faithful,
Here lies the body of Nathan Evans, the
elder.
Born in Treve Englis, in the county of
Montgomery,
in the principality of Wales.
A man, humble in affluence and
prosperity.
In the duties of religion devout.
In friendship faithful,
In his dealings just,
To the poor he dispensed with a liberal
hand.
To the church he was a generous and
bountiful benefactor,
and to all mankind a loving friend.
Having attained the age of eighty-one
years he calmly resigned
his soul unto the hands of the redeemer
on the 23rd day of December,
A.D. 1763
The memory of the just shall be held in
everlasting remembrance."
His descendants are widely distributed
throughout the United States"{Egle, Wm. H. Notes and Queries}

In the name of God,

Secondly: I bequeath
to my eldest son Nathan Evans the sum of five pounds lawful money of the

situated and to be forever paid from the profits of said land.

Notes for Lot Evans:
"Grandfather
Evans was a native of Berks County, Pennsylvania, but early in life removed to
a place near West Chester, Chester County, and in 1824 took up a residence at
Catawissa Furnace, Northumberland county. From here he removed in 1829 to
Pottsville, and thence in 1832 to St. Clair, same County, where he died in 1858
at the age of seventy one years. During the early years of his life, he was
engaged as a clerk; but upon his removal to Catawissa he erected a forge, a
furnace and a grist mill, and these continued to occupy his attention while he
remained there. During his stay in Pottsville, he was in the employ of the
Miner's National Bank, and continued in that relation until his removal to St.
Clair, when he became a superintendent of one of the collieries owned by Mr.
Nicholas. In 1853 he was engaged as a clerk by Mr. Whitfield and continued
several years. In the latter part of his life he was town clerk for a time, and
was also elected to the office of justice of the peace. He was a Whig and
republican in politics, a Quaker in religious faith, and had a family of six
children, four sons and two daughters."

Another old citizen of
our sister borough of St. Clair on Tuesday, departed this life, leaving a
family of grown children. No prince
could be worthier of unobtrusive and quiet in life. Baldwin Evans made money, friends, was
honored oft with local offices of trust and honor, and after living his life
honorably and well, leaves a living memory to friends and relatives. Among the children of the deceased were: Mrs.
Joseph Denning of St. Clair; Mrs. George Forney of Minersville; Mrs. Charles
Mister of Lansford and sons Frank. Thomas, Gracie, Clay H. and Alf. Deceased was the uncle of Clay W. Evans, the
merchant.

DEATH OF AN OLD
CITIZEN OF ST. CLAIR
On Tuesday morning last, Baldwin Jackson
Evans one of the oldest residents of St. Clair, died after a protracted
illness. Mr. Evans was one of the most widely known and most highly respected
citizens of our neighboring borough. He was born in 1819 at a small village
called Romansville in Chester County and was the oldest child of a family of
six. Two brothers survive him. About 50 years ago, the family removed to St.
Clair, which was then but a wilderness, not more than half a dozen families
having settled there. By his good habits and untiring zeal, he soon won the
esteem of all he became acquainted with and until his demise was universally
liked. For several years he held the position of outside foreman of the pine
Forrest Colliery, which was then owned by George W. Snyder, and some years
later was head clerk in Lucas and Dennings General Store at Glen Carbon. During
the past ten years, however, he was not able to work much, owing to consumption
having taken hold of his system. He leaves a grown up family of nine children
as follows; Mrs. Joseph Dennings, St. Clair; Mrs. George Farne, Minersville;
Mrs. C.W. Moister, Duke Center, McKean County and Alfred B., Latrobe,
Westmoreland County; Thomas J., John R., C. Frank., A. Gracey and Clay H. all
of St. Clair. His wife, who was formerly a Miss mary Reese, of St. Clair also
survives him.

prayers of a model mother. Her funeral will take place on Friday from her late
residence.

Notes for Margaret Ann
Evans:
Obituary, from the
papers of Margaret L. Steinruck Stahl
As a great surprise
came the report on Thursday morning last of the death of Margaret, the wife of
Col. Joseph H. Denning. To speak of this
lady's character seems superfluous for she was so well known to all the people.
A dutiful, patient, diligent, earnest woman, devoted most loyally to all her
family, bearing the burdens of each member as though they were her own. For
some time past her nervous system has caused her some trouble, but an attack of
pneumonia was the immediate cause of her death. A large circle of friends will
feel her loss almost as deeply as her immediate family. Her husband has the heartfelt sympathy of
everybody in his great bereavement. The funeral will take place this afternoon
at two o'clock, interment to be made in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.

Obituary from
Pottsville Republican dated August 8, 1910:
J. H. DENNING OF ST.
CLAIR DEAD
Seldom
has the death of a citizen called forth such universal expressions of regret as
that awakened in St. Clair yesterday when the announcement of the passing away
of Postmaster J. H. Denning was made. Although his mature years and enfeebled
condition has prepared the public for the end, many of the homes felt as though
a personal loss had been sustained. If
death ever had any recompense, the countless words of regret and sympathy must
have gone far to soften the blow the bereaved family received.
J. H. Denning was a man so unique in
character that few towns have been fortunate enough to possess his
duplicate. His disposition was his
richest asset for it carried him happy and contented through trials that would
have broken men of ordinary calibre. Called
upon to endure far more suffering than comes to the average human being, he
accepted blow after blow with the same unflinching fortitude, , and each time
came up with courage undaunted. From the
time he was a small boy, until the time of his death., Joe Denning shared his
dollars with his fellow men, and when the dollars were few, he denied himself
in order that his people and friends might not suffer. In character he was as clean and open as his
heart was in generosity. It is said that
an oath or a doubtful word never passed his lips. He was an attentive member of the First M. E.
Church and gave liberally to the support of all religious organizations in the
town. Of him, more than any other
resident of St. Clair, could it be said today that there is not one person to
speak an unkind word of his memory.
Mr. Denning was born in Wade almost
three-quarters of a century ago, and came to St. Clair when a boy. At an early age Mr. Denning devoted his time
to mining and for a long time conducted a colliery just north of St.
Clair. Here he passed through many
vicissitudes. He gave away as much coal
as sold, and payment for about half the balance is still awaiting the collection
of his executors. Time after time his
colliery failed for various reasons, but each time he began anew and finally
worked it to exhaustion.
He was one of the first volunteers to leave
St. Clair at the outbreak of the Civil War, enlisting with the three months
men. At the expiration of his term he
re-enlisted and served with distinction in the 7th Penna. Cavalry where he won
a commission. Three years ago he was
appointed Postmaster of St. Clair, his selection being the means of pacifying
bitter political strife in his town.
Although broken in health he devoted most of his days to the conduct of
the office, and spent almost his last hours in disposing of the business of the
department.
During recent years, death has invaded his
home time after time. A large family of
children and grandchildren found shelter under his roof. After the death of his
wife, a grandson was killed on the railroad, and only a few weeks ago, his
granddaughter, Sue Farne Thomas died very suddenly. Of the surviving relatives there remain four
sons and daughters: Will, Harry and Frank of St. Clair, Charley of Philada.,
Mrs. Carrie Steinruch, Philada., Mrs. Geo. Beck, Tamaqua and Mrs. J. Reese at
home.
POSTMASTER J. H.
DENNING LAID TO REST
One of the largest funerals held in St.
Clair in recent years took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock when the last sad
rites were performed over the remains of Postmaster Jos. H. Denning at the
family residence on N. Second St. by the Rev. C. M. Haddaway, former pastor of
the First M. E. Church, St. Clair, but now located in Phila., assisted by the
local pastor, Rev. Wm. Aspel. Upon
conclusion of the services the cortege proceeded to the I.O.O.F. cemetery, St.
Clair, where interment was made, the Rev. Haddaway officiating. The pallbearers were William and Ed Boone,
Jas. Thomas, Wm. Warren, Simon Beck, J. W. Reese. Undertaker Heiken of St. Clair had charge.

REGIMENTAL HISTORY
The 7th Pennsylvania
Volunteer Cavalry, 80th in line, reported at Louisville on December 25th 1861,
to Brigadier General Don Buell, who succeeded Sherman in the command of the
Department of the Ohio. The 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry arrived at Nashville on
March 18, 1862.
On April 1st the 1st
battalion marched to Columbia. The 3rd battalion went to Murfreesboro,
Tennessee. The 2nd battalion and headquarters remained at Nashville. During the
summer of 1862 the three battalions operated from the various positions until
September of that year. Company "F", at Lynville, Tennessee, has the
honor of being the first to meet the enemy on May 2nd,1862. On May 5th, the
second and third battalions, commanded by General George C. Wynkoop, were
concentrated on the Lebanon pike for the purpose of intercepting Morgan's march
to Kentucky. Morgan was at Lebanon. Wilson was in Tennessee. At break of day
Wynkoop's battery charged upon the surprised Morgan at Lebanon. Three distinct
charges were made and Morgan was finally routed. He left the field having had
half his command captured and a large number killed or wounded. In that battle
the regiment was baptized in fire and from that time forth its work was most
brilliant.
Numerous skirmishes
were participated in during the summer, viz: Lamb's Ferry, Sweeden's Cove,
Chattanooga, Murfreesboro, Galatin and a number of others. In September of 1862
the first battalion moved with General George H. Thomas to Kentucky, and was in
the battle of Perrysville on October 8th 1862. The second and third battalions
remained in Nashville, and on October 8th won the decisive action at LaVergne,
Tennessee.
In October, General
Beull was relieved of the command of the army of the Ohio. General W.S.
Rosecrans was assigned the position and the Army of the Cumberland was formed,
being concentrated at Nashville in December of 1862. A Cavalry Corps was also
organized, with General D.S. Stanley commanding. The 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry
was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd division of the Army of the Cumberland. It
participated in the battles of Stones River on December 31st, 1862: Rover,
January 31st, 1863: Unionville March 4th: Franklin, Thompson's Station, Aulton,
Liberty, McMinnville and several others.
On June 25th the army
moved to Murfreesboro. The First Brigade of the second division of cavalry
corps, operated on the right of the army. They charged the entrenchments at
Guy's Gap, and took 390 prisoners, killing and wounding a large number. The 7th
Pennsylvania Cavalry charged through Shelbyville, Tennessee, and captured
Wiggin's Confederate battery, drove Wheeler's command into and across the Duck
River, with the result that many of the latter were drowned.
One hundred men,
commanded by Captain Heber Thompson, have the credit of opening the battle of
Chickamauga and Pennsylvania had the first man, John Ward of the 7th
Pennsylvania Cavalry, killed.
In January, 1864 the
regiment was sent to Pennsylvania on a veteran furlough, after 538 men of the
regiment had reenlisted as veterans. It returned to Nashville in March, and
during the month previous, 1200 men enlisted.
The regiment moved to
join Sherman in Georgia on April 30th, 1864 and took part in battles as
follows: Dallas, Big Shanty, Noonday Creek, McAffee's Crossroads, Kennesaw
Mountain, Lost Mountain, Flat Rock, Covington, Lovejoy Station, Rome, with a 14
day entrenchment before Atlanta.
At the end of the
Atlanta Campaign, the Cavalry Corps, Military Division of the Mississippi was
organized under the command of General James H. Wilson in the spring of 1865.
Then followed the Wilson Raid through Alabama, capture of Selma, and the
pursuit and capture of Jefferson Davis. The Regiment was mustered out on August
23, 1865, at Macon, Georgia. We had marched 20,000 miles.
Lost during service
was nine officers and ninety three men killed and Mortally wounded and five
officers and one hundred eighty five men by disease. Total 292.
In 1997, Rob Frederick and Larry Fryer,
started a descendants organization. To date we have over 190 members. A

on Page 73 it should be added that comrade Denning was promoted to the rank of

having come all the way to St. Clair for winning his consent but unfair
treatment prompted his refusal and so he did not return.

I first entered the military service of
the United States by being enrolled by being enrolled at Saint Clair and
mustered in at Pottsville August 7th 1862. My rank on entering service was that
of Private and I was assigned to Company B 129th Regiment Pennsylvania
Volunteers. I afterward served in Company G 48th Pennsylvania Veteran
Volunteers Companies F and G 31st United States Company F. From the rank of
Private I was promoted to that of Corporal afterward to that of Second
Lieutenant and finally to that of First Lieutenant. I came near, however being
promoted to the rank of Captain having been recommended for that position and
been examined and had I remained in the service, would have received my
commission in two weeks It was on the 25th of November 1864 that I was promoted
to the rank of Second Lieutenant and assigned to a Company in the 31st Regiment
of United States Colored Troops. And it was on the 4th of March 1865 that I was
promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. The date of my first discharge was
Nov 13th 1863. This was at Harrisburg Pa. and was on account of expiration of
term of service. I reenlisted Feb. 24th 1864and on Nov. 23d 1864 was again
discharged at Fort Sedgwick Va. by Special Order of the War Dept. but this time
it was in order to accept promotion. My final discharge was Nov. 7 1865 at
Brownsville Texas in accordance with Order from War Dept dated Sept. 8th 1865. I
reached home Dec. 7th 1865. I believe I was the last Volunteer from Saint Clair
to reach home. The first time I was under fire was at the Second Battle of Bull
Run. I was afterward engaged in the Battle of Antietam, Fredericksburg,
Shepherdstown, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Poplar Grove
Church, Hatcher's Run, Five Forks, Capture of Petersburg, served in Fort Hell
also in a number of skirmishes, picket fights etc. I was twice wounded at
Spottsylvania May 12th 1864. One wound was in the right thigh. The other in my
left hand. I was laid up in a following hospitals- Carver, Washington D.C.,
West Buildings, Baltimore and Fillon, Wilmington Del.
The names of some of my comrade with
whom I was especially intimate are Wm H. Davis, Constantine Hess, William
Farne, George Weller, Theodore Hoch, George Brensinger, Lieut. H.C. Jackson,
Lieut, G.G. Pollock, George Farne, Thos Reid, George Watkins, Wm P. Atkinson,
Captain Cathcart, Captain J.R. Morris and Colonel James

What I consider to be one of the most
important events connected with my experience in the war was the explosion of a
shell at Fredericksburg which killed two members of my company, wounded four
others and raised me from the ground.
Another event which gave me occasion to
long remember was the fact of being twice wounded at Spottsylvania in arm and
thigh.
Another incident which I shall long
remember was my narrow escape from being captured by the rebels at Poplar Grove
Church.
While my memory is being refreshed in
calling up interesting early incidents associated with the early part of the
war I can hardly fail to bring to mind that fact that in August 1861 I ran away
from home and went to Harrisburg enlisted in the Military Service of the United
States and was assigned to Company F Seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry.
This service, however, was not for a long continuous period for at the end of
forth eight hours my mother appeared on the scene and all of my highly exalted
anticipations of war were dashed to the ground as she marched me home. It,
however, was not always thus. The next time I enlisted I took the important
precaution of gaining my mother's consent.
I served in the Fifth, Ninth,
Twenty-Fourth and Twenty-Fifth corps in Maryland, Virginia and Texas in the
Army of the Potomac, James and Rio Grande.
I was present at the Surrender of
General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865 and served on
the Rio Grande Texas from the mouth up to Eagle Pass. I engaged in a two weeks
campaign or scout after a roving band of Indians near Roma Texas.

Fell Dead in Home of
Friend, published January 1914
Remarking to her friend who was sitting in
the room with her, that it was snowing and raining outside, Miss Anna Dennings,
aged 15 years, of St. Clair, collapsed in her chair and fell to the floor
unconscious. Medical aid was secured but the young lady was beyond human
assistance.
Miss Dennings, who was the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Will Dennings, resided on Thwing Street. She had been ailing for some
time with her heart, but seemed to be responding to treatment. Friday afternoon
she announced her intention of going up to see her friend, Miss Jennie Carl, with
whom she had been an almost inseparable chum, and arrangements were made to
take her up to the Carl homestead on Patterson St.
She had been at Carl's almost three hours
when the attack seized her and appeared to be more cheerful than she had been
for some time past. Miss Carl had been talking to the girl and she almost
collapsed when the attack seized the girl. A sad part of the affair is the fact
that the father has been a patient at one of the Philadelphia hospitals for the
past several weeks.
Besides her parents the girl is survived by a
sister Maggie, at home, and Mrs. Amos Kelly, of Philadelphia.
Miss Dennings was an extremely popular
girl and her sad death was a blow to the greater portion of the town.

The Suicide of Chas.
J. Farne!
From our regular
correspondent
Charles J. Farne, of St. Clair, committed
suicide about ten o'clock last evening by shooting himself through the head. He
was 47 years of age and and is survived by a wife and large family.
The incidents surrounding Mr. Farne's
death are of a highly tragic nature. During the day he transacted business in
Pottsville where he met a number of friends and conversed pleasantly with them.
Towards evening he boarded an electric car for home, arriving at his residence
on North Second Street about dusk. There was no peculiarity about his manner
and no reason for suspecting that he contemplated such a terrible act. A
revolver was noticed in his pocket but this called for the only ordinary
comment. Mr. Farne was considered too wise and far seeing to take his life.
Late in the evening he retired to his
office. About ten o'clock a pistol shot report was heard by people upon the
street. When the door of the room was opened Mr. Farne was found lying upon the
floor dying, with a bloody gash in his head. Medical aid was called but the
injury was vital and death resulted in a few minutes.
No man was more widely known than Charkes
J. Farne. He was for many years identified with the N. G. P. and served as an
officer of company K. For three years he served as a member of the town council
retiring this spring. He was defeated last year and again last week for Justice
of the Peace. It is feared that these reverses preyed upon his mind. Mr. Farne
was a man of bright intelligence and keen wit. Under favorable conditions he
would have stood as one of the leading men of the county. His political friends
well recall the nominating address made before the Republican Legislative
convention one year ago, when he made the most brilliant speech ever heard on a
similar occasion.
Squire Farne is survived by a wife and
eight children, all of whom are highly respected in St. Clair, and will have
the sympathy of the entire county in the dire affliction.

OBITUARY FROM
POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN dated Feb 2 1914
TWO KILLED AT ST.
CLAIR IN DYNAMITE EXPLOSION
Frank Denning and an unidentified Italian,
both of St. Clair, were killed Monday morning at the Herbine strippings at that
place when a charge of dynamite which was being tamped ready for firing
exploded. Dennings and his helper had been working all morning and Mr. Dennings
who was the powder man, was loading the holes.
The charge had been placed in the hole and the Italian was tamping the
same when it suddenly went off without warning.
Both Dennings and the helper were instantly killed.
Mr. Dennings was forty years of age and a
son of the late Jos. H. Dennings for many years a coal operator at St.
Clair. He was married to Miss Bella
Cliff of Port Carbon, and a sad feature of the affair is the fact that this is
the sixth accidental death in the Cliff family in a short time. Two uncles and three brother-in-laws met
their deaths by accident recently.
To survive, Mr. Dennings leaves besides his
wife, two sons and one daughter. Two
brothers, Harry and Will of St. Clair, and a sister Mrs. George Beck of Phila.
also survive. The helper had not been identified
up to a late hour this afternoon. Dr R.
F. Weaver was called to attend the men and found that Mr. Dennings was crushed
by the blast about the chest. The
helper's entire body was shattered.
{Next days paper
notes} The funeral of Mr. Denning will be held on Thursday from his home on
Millins Hill.

Barbara S. Hillman, 83,
editor of area weeklies (By Dominic Sama, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER)
Barbara Steinruck
Hillman, 83, an editor of suburban weeklies and later a college publications
director, died of a blood infection Tuesday at Bishop Nursing Home in Media.
She lived in Exton and formerly in Berwyn. Mrs. Hillman began her career in
1941 after earning a bachelor's degree in English from Temple University. She worked
as a copy writer for the former John Wanamaker department stores and later
moved into sales promotion for Sears Roebuck & Co. She left Sears after a brief stint and,
starting in 1943, taught two years in a one-room schoolhouse in Glenmoore. She
often took her infant son, Gene, and the family's two collies to the school,
which was heated by a Franklin stove.
"On cold winter days," her son said, "she positioned me
between the two collies next to the stove, and there we dozed while she
taught."
In the late 1940s, Mrs.
Hillman was appointed associate editor of the former Downingtown Archive
weekly. In 1951, she and her husband,
Elston, purchased the Upper Main Line News, a weekly based in Paoli. Mrs. Hillman was a reporter and editor, her
husband publisher and photographer. Both also delivered the newspapers. In 1962, they sold the weekly, and Mrs.
Hillman became director of development and public relations for Moore College
of Art. She moved to Swarthmore College
in 1975 to edit publications. She retired in 1977 to care for her ailing
husband, who died in 1983. They had been married more than 40 years. In addition to her son, she is survived by a
sister and a grandson.
Burial will be private.
