Once I get to Charles that information was very easy to find. The family story that I was able to dig up on him makes him one of the most interesting ancestors for all of his activities. He was born on June 28, 1831. The story goes that he left New York [state] to head for the gold rush with a wagon and a team of horses. On his way he made many stops. Including LaPorte City, IN, where he met his future wife. He made it to the gold rush a few years late but hit it big. The story goes on that he took a ship down to Panama, walked across and caught another ship. He came up the river by riverboat till he came to St. Joseph, MO. There he met his dad and they came into Nebraska and looked the land over. His dad homesteaded a small farm. Chares went back to Indiana and married the county commisioner's daughter on January 15, 1857. Her name was Mary Martha Coplin (Copelin-and several other variations of the name). She had been born to Isaac B. Copelin and Lavina Evans on June 10, 1837. This branch of the family has been great for leaving detailed records and I have been able to track back to 1520 for a wedding date. Soon after their marriage they moved to Wisconsin where they resided from 1857 to 1865 near the town of Genoa. In 1865 he moved his family and all of his belonging to Nebraska settling near his dad's land. The house that he built is still standing and belongs to one of his decendants. He was very successful and accumulated over 1,400 acres of land. He passed away on September 26, 1907 and was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery south of Humboldt. His wife Mary died on January 23, 1909 and was also in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Their childred were: Isaac Conrad, Charles Albert, James Ellsworth, Francis Willard, John Willis, Harvey Bartlett, Allen Edgar, Sarah, Thomas E., and William H. Sarah, Thomas, and William all died in infancy.

In an excerpt of a letter to my mother from Kathy Svoboda in 1979, she stated that Charles Nelson and Mary Martha Burgett came to Nebraska in 1865 from Wolesworth [Walworth?], WI driving sheep ahead of their covered wagon. Most of the sheep died enroute in a blizzard according to their son, Allen C. Burgett. Charles N. Burgett was a farmer and adventurer. He went to CA during the Gold Rush. His nickname was 'Old Rough and Ready.' The town of Rough and Ready, locaed NE of Sacramento, was named for him. He was one of 10[?] boys and 1 girl in the Burgett family.
