Shot Fatal to Carley Mollette Martin County Man
Knocks Apple with Shotgun, is Killed
One of the strangest accidents ever to occur in this section happened later Friday afternoon when Carley “Reuben” Mollette, 25, was killed almost instantly near his home on Rockhouse Creek near Davisport in Martin County by a charge from a shotgun. Mollette was returning from squirrel hunting and it was believed he stopped under an apple tree to knock an apple from the tree with the butt of a shotgun when it was accidentally discharged, sending the full charge of shots into his chest just over the heart. A freshly knocked apple on the ground near Mollette and a twig broken from the tree indicated to his friends the manner in which his life had been taken. Mollette’s ten-year old brother Earl Mollette, who was nearby heard the shot, heard the victim exclaim, “Oh,” and saw him as he slumped to the ground. He was breathing his last when a neighbor, Epperson Mills reached him. Five days before the accident, Mollette’s wife, had given birth to a daughter. A brother of Mollette was drowned in Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River less than two years ago. Besides his brother and his wife and infant child, Mollette is survived by a 2-year-old daughter, Ernestine; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John “Cutfly” Mollette of Davisport; another brother, Arza Mollette of Davisport; four sisters, Mrs. Frank Cester of Inez; Mrs. Norman Spradlin of Williamsport and Elizabeth and Margarette at home. Funeral services were held Saturday by Rev. Herman Davis and Rev. Harve Newsome of the United Baptist Church. Burial was on the point near the Mollette home.

Columbus Dispatch April 11, 1963
Body of Man Is Found In Marshy Field
A man exercising bird dogs found the badly decomposed body of a 25 to 30 year old partially buried in a marshy field Thursday 300 yards north of Morse Rd. east of the North Freeway. Dr. Robert A. Evans, coroner, identified the man from papers found on the shabbily dressed body as Daniel Hawlyn (sic Havlyn) Jr., 537 ½ E. St., Richmond, IN. Richmond police told The Dispatch that they have no missing report on Hawlyn (sic Havlyn) and that his name is not listed for that address. No one by that name is listed in the Richmond directory. Evans said the body was so badly decayed he could not immediately determine the cause of death. No weapons were found at the scene. Evans ordered the body to the county morgue for examination.

The body of the man, Havlyn Daniel, Jr., who was employed at the Wallace Metal Products from late August of 1962 until early March, had been partially buried in the field east of Interstate 71. A man training his bird dogs found the body, according to The Associated Press. It is believed that all his relatives live in Columbus. Detectives said they found no evidence of foul play. Coroner Robert A. Evans said he could not determine the cause of death immediately. The body was taken to the county morgue for examination. Police said they believed the man had been dead four or five weeks. He(sic was) believed to have roomed at 320 South Tenth Street in Richmond, according to police here.

Columbus Dispatch April 12, 1963
Believe Man Drowned in Marshy Field
A Richmond, IN man whose partly decomposed body was found Thursday in a pool of marshy water in a field near Morse Rd. and the North Freeway may have died from drowning, Dr. Robert A. Evans, coroner, said Friday. However, Evans withheld a final ruling pending autopsy reports. He said there were no indications of foul play. The victim was identified as Havlyn Daniel, Jr., 22, whose father, Havlyn Daniel, Sr. lives at 12277 Cleveland Ave. The body was discovered by Dwight N. Day, 29, of 4549 Hartwell Rd., while he was exercising bird dogs in the field. Daniel was last seen on March7 when he and William Hoffman, 2198 Cleveland Ave., had car trouble on the North Freeway near Morse Rd. Hoffman told police that Daniel left to get another car. Hoffman was arrested for intoxication that night and his car impounded. Police said Hoffman went to Daniel Sr., the next day to ask where the younger man was, but the father told Hoffman it was not unusual for his son to disappear. Police believe Daniel was trying to reach his father’s house when he fell in the marshy ground and drowned.
